πŸ” What is ITR (Income Tax Return)?


Income Tax Return (ITR) is a form that individuals, businesses, or any other entity use to report their income earned in a financial year and the taxes paid on it to the Income Tax Department of India. It is submitted online through the official income tax e-filing portal.


Filing an ITR allows the government to assess how much income you earned, what exemptions/deductions you claimed, and whether you owe any additional tax or are eligible for a refund.


πŸ‘€ Who Should File ITR?

You should file an ITR if:


1. Your income exceeds the basic exemption limit in old regime:

 ₹2.5 lakh for individuals below 60

₹3 lakh for senior citizens (60–80)

₹5 lakh for super senior citizens (above 80)

(ITR Filing Requirement New Tax Regime ₹ 4 lakh)

2. You earn from salary, business, freelancing, investments, rent, or interest.

3. You want to claim a tax refund.

4. You have foreign income or foreign assets.

5. You are a company or firm, even if you have zero income.

6. You are carrying forward a loss to future years (e.g., capital losses).

7. You want to keep your financial records clean for loan or visa purposes.

Here are the commonly required documents for salaried and self-employed individuals:

For Salaried Individuals:

PAN Card

Aadhaar Card

Form 16 (provided by employer)

Salary slips

Bank account statements

Investment proofs (ELSS, LIC, PPF, etc.)

Rent receipts (if HRA is claimed)

Home loan certificate (if applicable)


For Business/Professionals:

PAN & Aadhaar

Books of accounts

Balance sheet & P&L statement

Bank statements

GST details (if applicable)

TDS certificates

Previous year’s ITR


For Capital Gains/Other Income:

Sale/purchase documents for property, shares, mutual funds

Interest income statements (FD, savings account)

Dividend statements
